True horror

Listen...

People ask me why I have this blog and I joke it's to promote my kids or post pics of Neil Gaiman but it's a lot more than that. It's not just my daily gossip column -- it's a place to vent because in the real world, I'm someone who internalizes and it's really great to have this outlet.

While I was in New York City this weekend having possibly the best time I have ever had in that city with my daughter and son, my husband went out to buy gas in Philadelphia and was thrown to the ground and brutally beaten by three thugs who then grabbed his car keys and sped off in our Jeep.

He's home now and okay though badly bruised. The police just called -- they found our car -- ironically twenty miles away and mere blocks from where Gary and I both grew up (!)...its windows smashed.

I guess it wasn't enough for them to hurt Gary -- who is the original long haired peace loving hippie -- and steal our car -- their rage was such they had to smash and break the windows, too.

Anyway, I do want to talk about the weekend and focus on things that are positive in this world and I will -- but right now I need to chill and be with Gary and make sure he really is okay. I worry about stuff like post-traumatic stress disorder and if I have it right now, I can only imagine how he must feel.

This sucks. It truly, truly sucks.

Later,
xo

  3. robin,

philly is getting worse and worse for crime. my boyfriend got mugged and beaten a few weeks ago while two blocks from his house. the guys who assaulted him had guns and while he didn't resist handing over his wallet they still pistol whipped him just for fun. apparently they enjoyed hurting someone for no reason.

i'm sorry that this happened to gary. i'm pissed off that this kind of thing is getting more and more common. after pat was robbed, we heard from other people who'd been robbed and or beaten up as well.

the cops are completely overwhelmed by their job and don't seem to be able to do anything.

i hope gary recovers soon both physically and emotionally and i hope they catch those f#ckers.

  8. Oh Robin. This is so terrible. How is Gary doing? Aside from being in the best care, can I do anything to help? Can he take a call? My love and strength to Gary and all of you. How scary.

  11. Thank you, everyone.

It's been a tough couple of days but we're thinking how much worse it could have been and since we have in fact been through worse in our long history together, we'll get through this debacle as well.

It's cool that it's the holiday season. Cheerful colored lights are everywhere in this house and Gary was actually up for cookie baking last night at like 10:00 p.m. -- it relaxes him and if you are one of the lucky recipients of his creations, you can tell by the results how much he enjoys it and how he excels in that department. I was his happy late night taste tester though I won't be getting on the scale anytime soon if I want to stay smiling.

Again, thanks for all of your thoughts and kind words. Gary read them and really appreciated it. (Yes! He now reads my blog! The man who despises computers loves my blog and has become a daily devotee and even voted for me every day as best diarist in the weblog awards! I feel so special!)

  13. Note to Gary:

Think of the great paragraph or two your unlucky mugger meeting will make in the annals of Robin Slickdom literature. You have made the ultimate unlucky sacrifice for the sake of novel writing! A true literary moment! But I'm just glad you're OK. I believe in karma. The people who committed the illegal acts will have a tougher road.

    Note to Robin:

Your strong soul (as well as your husband's) is what will make this holiday season one with exceptional meaning regarding: devotion, love, kindness, and tolerance.

Much love from the Nick household in Bakersfield!
